Call Congress: Free Julian Assange

Ongoing campaign action: call your rep and five more each week

The extradition of Julian Assange represents the greatest threat to the First Amendment protection of the freedom of the press in our lifetimes. If successful, this would be the first conviction of a publisher for printing truthful information in the public interest.

The mere extradition of Julian Assange to face trial in the Eastern District Court of Virginia would set a dreadful precedent in stone. That would mean that any other journalist could be extradited to any other country to face trial there for printing the truth as well. This case represents an existential threat to all journalists around the globe.

That is why we are asking American supporters to call 6 Congressmembers a week to urge them to cosponsor House Resolution 934, which affirms “the sense of the House of Representatives that regular journalistic activities are protected under the First Amendment, and that the United States ought to drop all charges against and attempts to extradite Julian Assange.”

Each of our elected officials is duty-bound to “protect and defend the Constitution against enemies both foreign and domestic” This effort is neither Democratic nor Republican, not a left or right issue but rather one that affects us all.

Each week, Assange Defense will be sending out a list of 5 new Congressmembers across the political spectrum, asking you all to call them. We will provide their direct DC office numbers and a script to help you get started. We also ask you all to add your own Congressperson to that list each week.

Once you’ve made your calls, encourage others to do the same by sharing this post with your networks and on social media. Thank you for joining us in the effort to protect journalists’ right to publish and all of our right to know.
